Thomas Kahry

Thomas Kahry is an Austrian writer, translator and cultural manager. He celebrated his breakthrough as an author at the renowned Burgtheater in Vienna, where his musical play „SPATZ UND ENGEL“ aka „PIAF/DIETRICH – A LEGENDARY AFFAIR“ (co-written by Daniel Große Boymann) ran for over 7 years. This was followed by new productions in Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Norway and the Czech Republic, as well as 2018 in Montreal and from 2019 to 2020 in Toronto, where the show, won the „Dora Mavor Moore Award“ for „Best Musical Production of the Year“. 

He is currently working on two projects with Broadway-legend Frank Wildhorn, and in collaboration with Gordon Greenberg and songwriters Tracy Miller and Carly Robyn Green. 

In 2022 he wrote the book for „HOLLYWOOD IN VIENNA: A CELEBRATION OF DISNEY CLASSICS – FEATURING ALAN MENKEN“ (Konzerthaus Wien).

He also wrote the acclaimed musical gala „WE ARE MUSICAL“ together with Christian Struppeck for VBW (The United Stages of Vienna), 2021 for the re-opening of the Raimundtheater. („Best Production of the Year“ – Broadway World Awards Austria 2022.)

Thomas Kahry also co-wrote the musical „AUGUSTIN“ with Christoph Weyers (and Wolfgang Ambros), as the musical play „KÖNIG DER ZWERGE“ with music by known German bands and singers (Die Toten Hosen, Die Prinzen, Die Puhdys, Rio Reiser, Peter Maffay et al) which will premiere in 2024.

Most recent works „GOOD BYE, FRÄULEIN ELSE“ (Vienna), „WEIBS-BILDER“ (Berlin, Vienna Musikverein and tours through D, A, CH), „A MUSICAL NIGHT WITH PIA DOUWES“ (Vienna), „CALLING YOU“ (Munich, Vienna) or the commissioned play „DIE 100-JÄHRIGE …UND KEIN BISSCHEN LEISE“ (co-written by Ute Wödl) for the 100th anniversary of the Austrian Chamber of Labor.

Thomas Kahry has conceived evenings and galas featuring artists such as Angelika Kirchschlager, Sona MacDonald, Rufus Wainwright, Marianne Sägebrecht, Rolando Villazón, Christa Ludwig, Edita Gruberova, Maria Happel, Christiane Hörbiger or Peter Simonischek.

In addition to his scenic works, Thomas Kahry is the author of a monograph on speech training in stage professions.
